State Programs and Incentives

We're constantly asked by homeowners about incentive programs for home energy efficiency improvements.

Several billions of dollars have been set aside for energy efficiency in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, or ARRA. (You can see the full breakdown on the Department of Energy's website.) At any given moment, though, the number of energy efficiency programs and incentives at the state, utility, and local levels is in flux. We suggest you pay a visit to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) for the most up-to-date information available on programs in your area. 

For federal incentives for energy efficiency, the authoritative source is Energy Star's Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency page. The Alliance to Save Energy (ASE) is another good source of information about federal tax credits, as is EnergyTaxIncentives.Org. 

States can decide how they deploy federal stimulus money. That's why we here at Energy Circle are excited to debut a new section that will highlight some of the more creative approaches to leveraging these funds. Our first is in our own backyard—and a response to many requests we've received about how to take advantage of the new program in Maine. With the Homeowners Guide to the Maine Home Performance Program, we aim to add to the information that will eventually appear on Efficiency Maine's website. And, even more important, we will  feature the details of successful projects, so homeowners can see firsthand what they can save and how much support the state will provide for their hard work.

Kudos to Efficiency Maine for getting this program off the ground. And to the approved Energy Auditors and Contractors using the program, we welcome your case studies. There are $9 million dollars for the taking, and a goal of fixing 4,000 homes. Let's get it on.
